Xylitol is a commonly used sweetener obtained from birch tree (Finnish xylitol) or corn cobs (Chinese xylitol). It has a lower calorific value than sugar and a dozen times lower glycemic index.

It looks like white sugar and tastes like that, but its calorific value is lower by more than 40% (240kcal in 100g) and it contains a fourteen times lower glycemic index. Xylitol is used as a low-calorie white sugar substitute, recommended especially for diabetics and people suffering from insulin resistance.
