Iron (II) gluconate

Iron (II) gluconate or ferrous gluconate is the iron (II) salt of gluconic acid. It is a black compound often used as an iron supplement. It comes in the form of a light yellow to brown powder. It is a food additive marked with the symbol E579. It is used in the processing of black olives – it gives them a jet black color. It is used in the treatment of hypochromic anemia. Too much consumption of ferrous gluconate can cause toxic effects.
