Pyridoxal phosphate (PLP, pyridoxal 5′-phosphate, P5P), is the active form of vitamin B6. It is a coenzyme in a variety of enzymatic reactions. PLP acts as a coenzyme in all transamination reactions, and in certain decarboxylation, deamination, and racemization reactions of amino acids. A variety of foods, such as meat, fish, nuts, grains, and vegetables contain vitamin B6. It’s involved in supporting the immune system, controlling blood glucose, creating hemoglobin and enhancing antioxidant defense. Vitamin B6 supplements such as P-5-P may help with nausea, premenstrual syndrome, atherosclerosis, and anemia. They can also prevent deficiency caused by some drugs and diseases.
